Fran Barnwell grew up in a small town in Michigan, one of eight children. He graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College. Fran was a fourth grade teacher in Vermont, before attending George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC. During law school, Fran worked part-time for USAir, and joined its in-house legal department as an employment law attorney upon law school graduation in 1981.

Fran and his family moved to Portland in 1984. Fran has been a shareholder with the firm since 1989, where his practice continues to emphasize employment practices, litigation, arbitration and mediation.

Fran has held firm management positions since 1990, has served as an adjunct professor of employment law at Willamette University School of Law, and has conducted numerous seminars and training sessions on employment law issues. Fran is also active in school activities and as a youth basketball coach.
